The Marion County Domestic Violence Task Force again used a supply drive for Safeplace as a means to both bring awareness to the problem of domestic violence and provide much needed items for the women and children in the shelter. More items were collected this year than in either of the two previous years. Volunteers all over the county were involved in the effort that included decorating boxes, dropping off and picking up boxes and donations, advertising the event, and storing and transporting the items. 125 pounds of donations came all the way from St. Mary Catholic Church in Wisconsin!
Volunteers loaded up three vehicles full of donated items on November 14th and transported them to the shelter. Many of those in the photo are members of the Northwest Alabama Rebel Cruisers Car Club, who brought their truck bed full of donations to the culmination of the event along with several cars and motorcycles.
This served to bring even more awareness to the event. While we will inevitably leave someone out, we want to thank everyone who was involved with this great project. The Safeplace staff and residents send their gratitude as well. Following is a partial list of groups who made this year’s supply drive such a huge success: Super Valu, Northwest Alabama Mental Health, Northwest Alabama Rebel Cruisers Car Club, Winfield Weight Watchers, Breeden’s Automotive, Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Winfield City Hall, Winfield Public Library, Winfield Middle School, Shepherd’s Field Church, Frosty Front, Jane Transportation, Marion Regional Medical Center, Bevill State Community College, WMTY, Marion County Courthouse, Winfield Mid-Day Kiwanis, Full Life Ministries, Kemp Church, Detroit Church of God, Hackleburg Civitans, Hackleburg High School, and Winfield First United Methodist Church. Since we know that domestic violence affects everyone, it was heartwarming to see people from all walks of life collaborate in this effort!
